Departments and Subjects

The Kindergarten program for children aged 3 to 5 is called the Foundation Stage. It is designed to prepare children to begin the National Curriculum for England, which starts around the age of five in Key Stage 1 and continues through to Key Stage 4. A child’s progress is closely monitored and assessed against appropriate age performance standards.

The early learning goals of the Foundation Stage are:

  • Confident to try things, initiate ideas and speak in a group;
  • Able to maintain attention, concentrate and sit still;
  • Interested, excited and motivated to learn.
  • Respectful of their own cultures and beliefs and those of other people showing a range of feelings including joy, awe, wonder and sorrow.

The FS is focused on whole-child development, proper attention is given to the social development, skills, and knowledge and understanding that children need to interact efficiently in a complex and changing world. Children in Kindergarten and Key Stage 1 are introduced to foundations in reading, writing, Science, Mathematics and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) through a system of practical applications, supported by a positive and stimulating learning environment.

The National Curriculum for England

This curriculum, commonly known as the British National Curriculum, is extensively used by international Schools around the world. It is a detailed, planned and integrated scheme covering a child’s whole School experience, from the age of 3 to 18. It is a skill-based curriculum, aided by excellent textbooks and resources, with its own testing mechanism. It fits into the English public examination system (IGCSE), which is accepted by universities throughout the world.TCSI caters to the needs of children aged 3 to 16.

Curriculum Information

The City School International – Dubai follows the National Curriculum for England in core and non-core subjects. The curriculum is further supplemented with Arabic, Islamic Studies, UAE Social Studies and Moral Education.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

“Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people, and in the world around them. Development is not an automatic process, however. It depends on each unique child and having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.”

At TCSI, we value Early Years Education and recognise the impact of a child’s early experiences upon their future learning. We believe our Early Years programme provides a stimulating, secure and fun environment for children aged 3 to 5, where they can grow in confidence and become independent, achieving skills which will allow them to become lifelong learners. We plan and organise a system to ensure that every child receives an enjoyable and challenging learning experience that is tailored to meet their individual needs. Our practitioners carry out regular observations of your child, using the information gathered to plan activities which reflect your child’s interests and abilities. These observations cover all areas of development within the EYFS, as well as recording special moments or your child’s response to certain activities. Observations are recorded in the child’s learning journey, a document which highlights the child’s development and provides you with a record of your child’s time at School for years to come.

There are four themes within the EYFS:

The new Early Years Foundation Stage was introduced in March 2011 for implementation in all settings by September 2102. Strands within the seven areas of learning have identifiable links to the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1, but the emphasis of the Foundation Stage curriculum is on learning through play.

At TCSI we follow the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage; it is divided into seven areas of learning – the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ which we feel embody our approach to learning.

The prime areas begin to develop quickly in response to relationships and experiences, and run through and support learning in all other areas. The prime areas continue to be fundamental throughout the EYFS.

Specific Areas of Learning

The specific areas of learning include essential skills and knowledge. They are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

We believe that children succeed in an environment where everyone knows what is expected of them, and where children are free to explore and learn, without the fear of getting hurt or being hindered by anyone else. We aim to work towards a setting in which children can develop their self-discipline and self-esteem in an atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement. For this, we set clear boundaries and will, through simple ground rules, maintain consistency for our children.

We promote a healthy lifestyle and by meeting the physical, cognitive and emotional needs of our children, we create a clean and safe environment for them to thrive in.

 

THE TCSI INCLUSION DEPARTMENT  -NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

TCSI embraces inclusion and the Inclusion Department was established to make sure that Students of Determination, the gifted and talented and those students who are having special educational needs are well taken care of and not left behind. We have a strong policy on Students of Determination and Policy for the Gifted and Talented that ensures that these students are properly identified and well taken care of. We make sure that students’ potential, skills and abilities are well developed and enhanced. The Inclusion Department works through the TCSI Achievement Center that is set up in a way that is conducive for student’s learning. Goals and targets for the students in the Achievement Center register or under its care are set to make sure that students excel and significantly progress academically. The inclusion department also touches life skills, communication skills, and social skills and makes sure that we meet and achieve the UAE National Agenda on the provision for, and achievements of students with special educational needs and disabilities.
We envision the leveraging of a diverse and inclusive learning environment for all students of determination and those who are gifted and talented. We ensure that all students belong in one safe environment for learning and development.
The Department serves as a bridge to embrace inclusion to make our school a conducive place for learning and development. Students of Determination and those who are gifted and talented are treated with respect and acceptance. Provisions for extra support and interventions, IEP’s, PLPs and Behavior Intervention Plans are made available for the Students of Determination where their progress is monitored and tracked. Therapy in school is also held in our school itself through our external partnerships and collaboration with other centers. Teachers are trained and equipped in handling diverse students in class especially those with special educational needs. The modified curriculum is also provided to students who may be working below their level.

The City School International is aspiring to offer for the first time A Level Business Programme to its students as well as those other students who are interested to study at TCSI.

At Post 16, (Years 12) a range of courses are offered to prepare students for higher and further education, training and employment. We expect all students to select four AS courses for Year 12 and encourage students to continue through to Year 13 to study four subjects or at least three subjects at A2. This will equip them to make choices from a wide range of universities and education providers, as well as preparing them for future employment.

The Post 16 Curriculum is enriched by a robust community service programme, academic and careers education and a programme of learning that develops 21st century skills. The school is an approved center for international examination board CAIE (Cambridge Assessment International Examinations). The school also gained a Fellowship status, a prestigious award for continuing excellence in examination results, with CAIE.

Children learn best when they actively participate in the learning process. Learning through structured play and field trips forms an integral part of the Kindergarten and Key Stage 1 curriculum.

Supported by a well-resourced library and computer facilities, the students in Kindergarten and Key Stage 1 are encouraged to explore and develop their natural abilities and talents.

 By the end of Year 2, it is expected that all students would have developed social skills, an enthusiasm for learning, will be able to read and write and use simple mathematics at a level appropriate for their age or beyond. They will have gained a significantly improved understanding of our world through knowledge of elementary History, Geography and Science. Of course, they will have begun to develop their creative talents in Art and Music alongside their physical development through dance, games and gymnastic activities.

                                        

Year 3 to Year 6

The core academic curriculum includes instruction in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Geography, History, and Information and Communications Technology. Arabic is taught to all children and caters for native and non-native speakers. The overall education experience is supplemented with instruction in Art, Music, Physical Education, Islamic Studies/Moral Studies and PSHE.

 Students in this program follow Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum for England, which continues to build on the foundations that are established in Kindergarten and Key Stage 1.

 On-going assessment ensures that each child’s progress and development are continuous and meet the predetermined standards. We encourage students to think independently, use their initiative and to participate in a meaningful and active manner in the learning process.

A selection of extracurricular activities broadens the opportunities for students to enhance their natural abilities and to challenge themselves through development of new interest areas. Extracurricular activities may include Ballet, gymnastics, swimming, a variety of sports activities and a number of school clubs.

 Throughout the educational experience at TCSI-Dubai, students are involved in learning the practical use and application of Information and Communications Technology.

Development of leadership qualities and skills is put into practical application in Key Stage 2 providing each student the opportunity to share class and school responsibilities that nurture organisational skills, cooperation, accountability and team spirit.

By the end of Year 6, students will have gained a well-rounded education. They will have matured through understanding and character development, have developed articulate expression and confidence and will be well-prepared for their secondary education.

 

Year 7 to Year 8

Subjects taught include: English, Literature, Mathematics, Social Studies, History and Geography, Science, Computer Sciences, Physical Education, Arabic, Islamic studies/Moral Studies.

 

Year 9, 10 and 11

In Key Stage 4, the IGCSE curriculum (Years 9, 10 and 11) is introduced. A range of subjects, catering for a variety of academic needs and interests, are offered.

These include the following compulsory subjects: English, Mathematics, Environmental Management, ICT, Arabic, Islamic Studies and PE.
